CKXS Sports Briefs: June 12, 2012

NHL

The Los Angeles Kings are the Stanley Cup Champs! The Kings took care of business on home ice, pounding the New Jersey Devils 6-1. The game was never in question, as the Kings scored three times on the powerplay after Devils forward Steve Bernier was given a five-minute major for boarding just over 10 minutes into the game after bloodying Rob Scuderi with a hard hit from behind. The Kings never looked back. Jeff Carter and Trevor Lewis both scored twice, while Conn Smythe winner Jonathan Quick made 17 saves for the victory. The win marks the first Stanley Cup in franchise history for the Kings, who become the first 8 seed to hoist Lord Stanley.

Other NHL news

The Edmonton Oilers have hired former coach Craig MacTavish to be the team’s senior vice-president of hockey operations. MacTavish, 53, was head coach of the Oilers for eight seasons from 2000 and 2009.

The Boston Bruins agree to terms with forwards Chris Kelly and Gregory Campbell on multi-year deals on Monday. Kelly’s deal is for four years for a toal of $12 million while Campbell has a three-year deal worth $4.8 million.

JRC Hockey

The Wallaceburg Lakers are holding a tryout camp… and they are seeking players born in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996. The camp will run Saturday Aug 11th from 10:30 am – 4:30 pm at the RBC Arena in Sarnia. Cost is $50. Check out the 99.1 facebook page for more details.

Local soccer news

Over the weekend the Wallaceburg Girls Under 17 team defeated the London Southend Sabres 6-1 – Emily Pepper was on fire with four goals, Amanada Johnston and Alyssa Lucier each had one. They also defeated Byron 3-1. Emily Pepper had two goals and Alyssa Lucier had one. The girls are now 4-0-1 in league play.

NBA

The FInals get started tonight, as the the Miami Heat head to OKC to face the Thunder. Tip off is set for 9 p.m.

MLB

Washington 6 at 3 Toronto – The Blue Jays lost a bit more than the game as well… as starter Brandon Morrow left the game after throwing just nine pitches. The injury is a strained left oblique muscle. He will be re-evaluated today.
