High School Track and Field

This past weekend, four Chatham-Kent athletes qualified for the OFSAA tack and field championships in Brockville, which runs from today to Saturday. Chatham Christian’s Amy Bultje jumped 1.50 metres in the midget girls high jump to finish third. UCC’s Anastasia Maslak finished fourth in the midget girls triple jump with a distance of 10.56 metres. John McGregor’s Anique Daley ran the 400-metre hurdles in 1:05.47 to finish fourth in the senior girls division to find her way to OFSAA. And Chatham-Kent Secondary School’s Cianna Bechard threw the javelin 28.96 metres to finish fourth in the midget girls division and advance to OFSAA.

A reminder that the Wallaceburg Red Devils will next be in action on Sunday, when the Devils host Owen Sound. Wallaceburg sits second in the Far West division, four points behind London, with a 9-6 record.

Stanley Cup Finals

The New Jersey Devils staved off elimination last night in LA.. beating the Kings 3-1 avoiding the sweep. The game was scoreless until the third period. Patrick Elias scored first for Jersey at the 7:56 mark but just over a minute later Drew Doughty scored for the Kings to tie it up. When overtime was looking imminent, former Windsor Spitfire Adam Henrique potted the winner at the 15:29 mark, Ilya Kovalchuk added an empty netter. Martin Brodeur made 21 save for the win. Game 5 will be Saturday night in New Jersey.

More NHL News

The suffeling continues on the Habs bench. The club fired assistant coaches Randy Cunneyworth and Randy Ladouceur on Wednesday. The move comes one day after Michel Therrien was named the team’s new head coach. The club is also expected to name Martin Lapointe as their new director of player development.

NBA Playoffs

Oklahoma City are heading to the NBA Finals! The Thunder rattled off their fourth straight win in the Western Conference Finals, beating San Antonio 107-99. Kevin Durant led the way with 34 points and 14 rebounds.

The Thinder will awaiti the winner of the Heat/.Celtics series. Boston holds a 3-2 series lead, and they can eliminate the Heat tonight in Game 6. Tip off is set for 8:30 in Bean Town.

Tennis News

Six-time champion Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer were Wednesday’s quarterfinal winners and the two Spanish stars will now meet in Friday’s men’s semifinals at the French Open.

The Blue Jays topped Chicago 4-0. Brandon Morrow pitched a two-hitter for his third shutout of the season. Jose Bautista and Rajai Davis homered in the win…
