CKXS Sports Briefs: July 16, 2012

JRB Lacrosse

Wallaceburg is still buzzing after the huge Red Devils sweep on Friday night. After being down 6-1 after one period, Wallaceburg stormed back for a 15-12 win, sweeping London out of the playoffs. The Red Devils will now face the top-ranked Six Nations Rebels in a best-of-five conference final. The Rebels have won the Founders Cup as Canadian junior ‘B’ champions three out of the last five years, and they’re hosting this year’s tournament. We’ll pass along the schedule as soon as its finalized.

Local racing news

Chatham’s Darryl Hoekstra picked a great night to win his first career feature race as he took the checkered flag in the UMP Modified Mid-Season Championship on Saturday in front of a large crowd at South Buxton Raceway. Wallaceburg’s Drew Smith finished 10th. Meanwhile, Chatham’s Randy McKinlay led all 25 laps to win the Mid-Season championship in the Sport Stocks. Wallaceburg’s Willy Vyse finished ninth. Saturday night’s other two Mid-Season championships extended their current feature win streaks as Blenheim’s Shawn Jones won his fifth straight in the Comp 4s and Chatham’s Brad Authier won his fourth in a row in the UMP Late Models.

NASCAR

Kasey Kahne beat Denny Hamlin at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway yesterday, for his second win this season. He’s twelfth in the Sprint Cup standings, and he’s the only driver between 11th and 20th who has two wins,   so he’s headed for a wildcard spot in the season-ending Chase for the Sprint Cup. Hamlin led for most of the race, but fell behind after a miscommunication among his pit crew.

Men’s soccer

The Wallaceburg Sting dropped a game on Saturday. Bosnia beat the Sting 1-0 in a game played in London on Saturday.

MLB

Both the Jays and Tigers kept their opponents off the scoreboard yesterday.

Bouncing back from his terrible All-Star game start, Tigers ace Justin Verlander struck out 8 in 8 innings, only giving up 3 hits, to improve to 10-5 on the year in a 4-0 win over Baltimore. Austin Jackson led the game off with a homer, and Miguel Cabrera cracked his 20th.

Carlos Villanueva went to 4-0  on the year, pitching 6 innings of shut out ball, striking out 8 Cleveland Indians, in a 3-0 victory. Darren Oliver picked up the save.

More Blue Jays news

Sergio Santos will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery after he felt discomfort during a throwing session on Saturday. The 29-year-old right hander, who the Jays were hoping would be their closer after being acquired from the Cubs in the off-season, is anticipated to return to the team for spring training.
