Wallaceburg’s Jonah Pataki has been named the Ontario Football Conference (OFC) Player of the Week for Week 5. During Week 5, Pataki carried the ball 12 times, picking up 173 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns for the Chatham-Kent Cougars senior varsity team. Pataki is averaging over 80 yards per game. Pataki and the Cougars will close out their regular season schedule this weekend against the Forest City Thunderbirds.

Onto the diamond

Chatham’s Larry Balkwill is making waves this summer playing for the Haymarket Senators of the Valley Baseball League. Yesterday the UCC grad, set a new single season home run record for the squad, clubbing his 10th dinger of the season. It was a dramatic one as well, hitting it in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the 14th inning to lift the Senators to a 15-13 win over the Winchester Royals.

NHL

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed defenceman Shea Weber to a 14-year offer sheet worth around $100 million. The Nashville Predators now have seven days to match the offer if they wish to retain Weber’s services.

CFL

Ricky Ray threw three touchdown passes, including a 37-yard strike to Jason Barnes with 2:06 remaining, as the Toronto Argonauts beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 25-22. Three Winnipeg players went down with injuries, after their starting QB Buck Pierce already missed the game due to injury.

MLB

LA Angels 2 at 7 Detroit – Doug Fister was on top of his game… allowing only two hits in 8 innings of work, while striking out 10 LA Angels in a 7-2 Tigers win over the Angels. Prince Fielder was 2-4 with a couple of RBIs.

The Jays fell to the New York Yankees 6-0. Ricky Romero gave up 12 hits and 6 runs in 6 innings pitched. The game was shortened by rain, after 7 innings played.

The injury bug hit the Jays once again as well, as third baseman Brett Lawrie is listed as day-to-day with a bruised right calf, after tumbling into a camera while chasing down a pop up.
