CKXS Sports Briefs: July 27, 2012

JRB Lacrosse

It was another nail biter last night, but the Wallaceburg Red Devils can wrap-up their OLA semi-final series with the Rebels on Saturday night. Wallaceburg beat Six Nations on the road 8-7. The Red Devils jumped out to an early lead, and managed to fend off the Rebels attack in order to grab a 2-1 series lead. Clint Lamarsh had 3 goals and 2 assists to lead Wallaceburg, Brennor Jacobs stopped 56 shots for the big win. Game 4 is set to be held in Wallaceburg tomorrow night at Memorial Arena. “Code Red” will be in full effect. The ball drops at 8 p.m.

Minor lacrosse action from Wednesday

The Wallaceburg Griffins battled the Windsor Warlocks
The Bantams won 5-4.
The Tykes won 12-3.
Windsor beat the Wallaceburg Novice team 8-3.

Local baseball

This weekend, Dresden and Wallaceburg are hosting a Jr. Baseball tournament The Dresden Jr. baseball team consists of local players from Dresden, Wallaceburg, Petrolia, and area. Dresden opens up play Friday night at 6 p.m. against Rexdale in Dresden’s Kinsmen Park. A homerun derby will be taking place in Wallaceburg at 3 opm Saturday as well.

JRC Hockey

The Dresden Junior Kings are holding an upcoming tryout camp. It runs from Aug 13 -15 and Aug to 18th and 19th at the Thames Campus Arena in Chatham. Cost is $50 for the camp. Check out the Kings page on Facebook for more details on how to sign up.

PGA

David Hearn of Brantford, Ontario opened with a 68 and is three shots back of the leaders in the first round of the RBC Canadian Open at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club. Five players, including Charl Schwartzel and Stuart Appleby (-5), share the clubhouse lead.

NHL

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed free agent forward Alexander Semin to a one-year, $7 million contract.

The Flyers signed forward Jakub Voracek to a four-year contract Thursday, worth $17 million.

MLB

Edwin Encarnacion and Kelly Johnson homered yesterday afternoon as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated Oakland 10-4 to halt the A’s’ winning streak at seven games.

The Cleveland Indians grabbed the final game of their series with the Detroit Tigers last night, the Tribe won 5-3. Justin Verlander was tagged with his 6th loss of the season, he gave up five runs in 7 iunnings pitched, while striking outn 4 and walking 2. The Tigers drop a half game back of the White Sox for the lead in the AL Central.

CFL

Winnipeg slipped past Edmonton 23-22.

Olympics news

London’s seven years of preparation will culminate in the official opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games this afternoon. After months of speculation, Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle’s $27 million dollar extravaganza is ready to be revealed. They get rolling around 4 p.m. our time.
