The Wallaceburg Red Devils run came to an end last night. The Six Nations Rebels rattled off two straight wins over the weekend, beating Wallaceburg 14-12 Saturday, before winning the decisive Game 5 yesterday, in a defensive battle 5-4. The Rebels jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period, and the Devils could quite claw all the way back. Jordan Van Damme scored a pair, while Jordan Durston and Branden Lilley scored the Devils goals.
London 2012 Olympics
A local angle to some big news yesterday. Sarnia gymnast Dominique Pegg is a part of the artistic gymnastics team who qualified for the team final for the first time in Canadian history. A Former Blenheim Golden Eagles gymnast, Pegg attended school in Blenheim until 2003 when she moved to Sarnia. The women’s team final takes place tomorrow.
Team Canada got on the board yesterday, as Quebec’s Émilie Heymans partnered with Jennifer Abel in synchronized diving to capture a bronze medal. This is Heyman’s fourth Olympic medal of her career, winning in four straight Olympic Games.
The Canadian men’s rowing-8 rowing team qualified for the finals. The defending Olympics gold medalists in the event, started off slow finishing last in their opening heat of the Games, but they rallied to qualify yesterday. The finals are Wednesday.
The US Men’s basketball Dream Team topped France 98-71 in their opening game yaesterday. Kevin Durant led all scorers with 22 points.
And Michael Phelps of the US is inching closer to becoming the most decorated Olympian in history. He was a part of the silver medal winning squad in the men’s 4 x 100 m relay team that was upset by France. The American swimmer has won 17 Olympic medals in his career, one shy of the 18 earned by Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina.

Jhonny Peralta cracked two home runs and Doug Fister pitched eight strong innings yesterday as Tigers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 to avoid a sweep.
Auto Racing
Chatham’s Louis Clements swept all three races in the UMP Modifieds, including his second career feature race, on Saturday night at South Buxton Raceway. Ridgetown’s Dale Glassford led all 25 laps to win the UMP Late Models, with Wallaceburg’s Mike Lewis finishing sixth after winning the heat race earlier in the night. Merlin’s Steve Shaw led all 20 laps to win the Sport Stocks feature, with Wallaceburg rookie Willy Vyse finishing third. Cottam’s Denis DeSerrano led all 15 laps in his fourth Comp 4 feature win of the season.
