Local lacrosse

Wallaceburg’s Emily VanDamme and Team Ontario lost the gold medal game yesterday to B.C. 4-2. They had to settle for a silver medal.

Men’s Soccer

The Wallaceburg Sting are getting set for their semi-finals match in the First Division Cup. Last weekend the Wallaceburg squad beat the top rankled London Bosnia squad 3-2 in penalty kicks. They will now face London English tomorrow in London.

London 2012 Olympics

Sarnia’s Dominique Pegg finished 17th yesterday in the all-around competition in women’s gymnastics. The Rondeau native alrerady helped team Canada place 5th in the team contest.

The Canadian women’s eight won Olympic silver in an exciting final race at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Four years after a fourth-place finish at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the Canadian crew re-established Canada as one of the top women’s crews in the world.

Canadian badminton women’s doubles pair Alex Bruce and Michele Li fell to a Japanese pair in semifinal play. Canada will play the Russian pair for the bronze medal today.

Canada now sits with 7 medals. 2 silver and 5 bronze.

American Michael Phelps became the first male swimmer to win the same Olympic title at three-straight Olympic Games on Thursday, winning his first individual gold medal of the London 2012 Olympic Games in the men’s 200-metre individual medley.

Carmelo Anthony and Team USA broke record in a 156-73 route over Nigeria . Melo set U.S. Olympic records for points in a game with 37, three-pointers made with 10 and three-pointers attempted with 12.

MLB

Josh Reddick smacked a two-run homer to help lead the Oakland A’s to a 4-1 win over the Blue Jays. Oakland improved to 14-5 since the All-Star break.

The Tigers had the day off, but they’ll start a big weekend series with the Cleveland Indians at Comercia Park tonight.
