JRC Hockey

The Wallaceburg Lakers started their pre-season off on a positive note! The Lakers topped Mooretown 4-0 The Lakers play a second exhibition game vs. Mooretown at home on Wednesday Sept. 5th. Game time is 7:30.

The Dresden Kings will take to home ice for the first time this pre-season tonight, when they host the Blenheim Blades. Alvinston will also be hosting Mooretown tomorrow, and Belle River will visit Wheatley.

NFL

Wallaceburg’s Shaun Suisham was good on his only field goal attempt last night as the Pittsburgh Steleers beat Carolina 17-16 in close match-up to wrap up the pre-season. Suisham connected from 49 yards out with 41 seconds remaining in the first quarter

MLB

The Toronto Blue Jays topped the Tampa Bay Rays 2-0 last night. It was the second win in a row for the Blue Jays who are 8-19 in August and last in the American League East.

Kansas City completed thje sweep over the Detroit Tigers, winning 2-1. Rick Porcello was tagged with the loss, while Jeremy Guthrie picked up the victory. The Tigers start a huge weekend series against the Chicago White Sox… the Sox enter the series 3 games ahead of Detroit in the AL Central

US Open Tennis

Canada’s Milos Raonic used 30 aces to help him advance to the third round of the US Open with a 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory of Paul-Henri Mathieu of France on Thursday. Raonic, the 15th seed, won 90 per cent of his first-serve points and used a strong serve that topped out at 141 miles per hour..

Andy Roddick says he plans to retuire from pro tennis following this years US Open… The former Number one ranked player made the surprise announcement yesterday, which was his 30th birthday…

NHL

The NHL’s collective bargaining talks are set to resume today. Donald Fehr, the executive director of the NHL Players’ Association, had originally said he was “optimistic” the union would table a counter-proposal yesterday. It’s unclear if the union will present that offer when talks restart

The Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms with forward Jordan Eberle on a six-year, $36 million contract extension. The 22-year-old scored 34 goals and added 42 assists in 78 games for the Oilers last season.
