CKXS Sports Briefs: October 19, 2012


The Detroit Tigers are going to the World Series. The Tigers pounded the Yankees 8-1 to complete the sweep in 4 straight games. Max Scherzer picked up the win in the clinching game, striking out 10 in 5.2 innings. Jhonny Peralta went yard twice, and Miguel Cabrera and Austin Jackson also went deep. DH Delmon Young was named MVP of the ALCS for his 4 game winning RBIs in the series. The Fall Classic is set to start in the National League Park on Wednesday.

In the senior circuit

St. Louis topped the Giants 8-3. They now hold a 3-1 series lead.

Local hoops

A Wallaceburg native is still gathering online votes, in hopes of capturing the Female Baller of the Year Award for Basketball Ontario. Deanna Kerkhof has also been named to the First-Team All-Conference for the pre-season, as her Northeastern squad is ranked sixth in their conference as well. Voting for the Baller of the Year goes until Monday, Oct. 22nd at 6 p.m. Kerkhof says her teammates at Northeastern have helped her get a ton of votes. Some advice for the youth, she says other girls from the Wallaceburg area need soak up knowledge from local coaches, and work extremely hard to get to the level she is at. The first place Panthers beat the Lancers 61-30.

DespiteĀ optimismĀ this week, three counter proposals by the Player’s Association were turned down by the league yesterday. Both sides are unlikely to meet again until next week.
