CKXS Sports Briefs: January 17, 2013


The Wallaceburg Lakers snapped their losing streak last night with a 5-3 win over the Blenheim Blades. Sam Jasmin led the way with two goals and two assists, Justin Whitson had two goals and one assist while Brennan Rainey had a goal and an assist for the Lakers. Joel Sowinski made 34 saves in the win. Head coach Kris Jacobs says it was a great character win and the team hung in there for a big win. The Lakers head to Mooretown on Saturday.


Lasalle beta Strathroy 5-1.

And London topped Leamington 3-2.

NHL notes

The Toronto Maple Leafs traded forward Matthew Lombardi to the Phoenix Coyotes for a conditional draft pick.

Travis Zajac signed an eight-year, $46 million contract with the New Jersey Devils.

And one day after the agreement of an accelerated compliance buyout, the Montreal Canadiens placed Scott Gomez on unconditional waivers. Should he clear waivers on today at Noon, Montreal will be able to buy him out. The Rangers did the same with Wade Redden.

Chatham native and Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks star Max Allin has been named CIS Athlete of the Week. Allin set a new Wilfrid Laurier single game scoring record in a 94-88 loss to the Guelph Gryphons Saturday lighting up the court with 43-points. He now leads the country in points per game with 26.3.

Tennis news

Canada’s Milos Raonic is heading to the third round of the Australian Open. He defeated Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic 7-6 (7-2), 6-2, 6-3. The 13th seed play again on Sunday.
