CKXS Sports Briefs: February 5, 2013


The Playoffs got under way last night across the league.

It was the Blenheim Blades drawing first blood in their series with the Dresden Kings, with a 4-2 win. Despite being out shot 32-19, the Blades were successful on two power plays and managed to squeeze a couple more past Brent Paxton for the win. Alex Ritchie and Macks Holmes scored the Dresden goals. Game 2 is set for tomorrow night in Blenheim.

The Wheatley Sharks hammered the Alvinston Flyers in Game 1, 8-2. Sebastian Kannally and Riley Babkirk each scored a pair for the Sharks, who out shot Alvinston 27-25. Game 2 is Wednesday back in Wheatley.


Game 1 between the Canadiens and Flags takes place in Belle River.

Game 1 between the 73s and Comets takes place in Essex.

No local action in the JRB or OHL loops.


Carolina 4 at 1 Toronto – Jordan Staal scored his first at a member of the Canes, his brother Eric scored the game winner as well.
Vancouver 3 at 2 Edmonton (OT) – Christopher Tanev netted the OT winner.
Dallas 3 at 2 Colorado
Minnesota 1 at 2 Phoenix
San Jose 1 at 2 Anaheim


Detroit 85 at 99 New York – Jose Calderon scored 15 points in his Pistons debut.


The Detroit Tigers have agreed to a one-year, $6,725,000 contract with right-hander Max Scherzer and avoided salary arbitration. Scherzer was 16-7 last season with a 3.74 and struck out 231, second in the league only behind his teammate Justin Verlander.
