JRC Hockey Playoffs

The Great lakes junior C Hockey League championship series kicks off tonight, when the top ranked Essex 73s host the Wheatley Sharks in Game 1 of their best-of-seven series. Game 2 is set for tomorrow in Wheatley, before Game 3 shifts back to Essex on Friday.

No local action in the JRB Playoffs.

Girls high school hockey.

The UCC Lancers are heading to OFSSAA. Playing their first game in seven weeks, the Lancers beat the Lakeshore St. Anne Saints 3-2 in the SWOSSAA final last night. Maddie Lalonde netted the winner with three minutes left in the third period. The OFSSAA tourney is March 18-21 in Orillia.


New Jersey 2 at 4 Toronto – Nazem Kadri, Jay McClement, Clarke Macarthur and Phil Kessel all scored for the Leafs. James Reimer made 28 saves for the win this was his first game since Feb. 11.

More NHL notes

The league is borrowing a page from the NBA when it comes to the draft lottery. All 14 teams that miss the playoffs, or the teams that hold the rights to the top 14 picks, will be eligible to win the No. 1 draft pick when the lottery is held on April 29.

High school boys hoops

The UCC lancers were knocked out of the OFSSAA tourney in two straight games. Stoney Creek Cardinal Newman topped the Lancers 57-20 before the No. 2 ranked Etobicoke Father Henry Carr beat them 74-46 in the second round. Jazz Miguel-White scored 15 points for UCC in their second game.

World Baseball Championship news

Reds star Joey Votto has decided he’ll play for Canada in the tournament. The Canadians open the tourney on Friday against Italy.
