Through Daniel’s Lens: A Team United

UCC Lancers Rugby

The UCC Lancers team poses for a photo – Photo by Daniel Swan

This photo from my collection takes us all the way to London, Ontario on May 14th 2014.

The place was St. George’s Field, a field that has seen championship games come and go. In 2001 it was the site of the PAN-AM Games Rugby Tournament among many others. I got to the field shortly after 9:30 and I met some of the UCC Lancers boys rugby team and I could tell right away that here was a bunch of guys who enjoyed what they did but in times of need they would come together.

Since it was going to be a while before UCC started, I ventured off to take some shots of the Wallaceburg Tartans Girls’ team about more which in my previous story and I then headed to the Lancers’ spot and the first of three fantastic matches between three equally gifted schools was on. First up was Assumption the boys lost that one but made some very well planned plays. Next was Beal this game was the Lancers’ victory in which I witnessed several well timed goals. Unfortunately today I also was witness to several players getting hurt which is a part of the game but also sad to see especially when the opposition ‘plays it rough’

And Rough was something that the next opponent, South Elgin was all too well disciplined in out of all the teams I saw the Pines take on these guys really played a ‘Hardball’ game of sorts.

After that game it was the end of the line for the Lancers but what I witnessed today more than anything was a team that respected one another and treated each other like Brothers and in times of need they really helped a brother out 🙂

On the way home I stopped at the Dutton OnRoute for a coffee and I ran into a few of the players. One of them asked me for a copy of the photo above so he could frame it on his wall and that is the highest compliment a photographer can get.
