Chatham-Kent’s sports calendar in June flipped from high school sports, to athletes beginning their summer seasons. This June however, was highlighted almost entirely by news from the high school realm.

Here are the top highlights from sports in Chatham-Kent in June 2014:

  • Luke Allin Commits To Wilfrid Laurier – The most hyped men’s basketball player in Chatham in his age group, all Allin had to do was decide. Heavily recruited by several schools from across the Province, Allin decided to follow in his older brother Max’s footsteps and join the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, who compete in the OUA.
  • Desjardins Golden At OFSAA – After medalling at OFSAA track and field last year, Pain Court student Morgan Desjardins propelled her status in the Ontario track and field scene as far as she propelled the shot put at the 2014 OFSAA track and field meet, as the grade 10 student took gold in Junior Girls shot put with a throw of 11.29m. Desjardins would follow up that performance with a silver in discus.
  • Tartans Earn Back To Back Football Titles -Facing the UCC Lancers, the Wallaceburg Tartans earned a come from behind, 47-29 victory, capturing their second straight Kent football title. After a sparkling performance in the semi-final, Parker Gilhuly paced the Tartans, scoring four long touchdowns of 86, 79, 75, and 50 yards in the final.
  • Sophia Vlasman Passes Away – All of Chatham-Kent paused June 6, as local student and athlete Sophia Vlasman sadly passed away. Vlasman, a 16-year-old UCC student however, left behind a lasting legacy of #HopeCourageStrength
  • Lindley, Truong Win Jack Parry – Annually reserved for the top high school student-athletes in Chatham-Kent, the 2014 Jack Parry award was handed out to CKSS Golden Hawks athlete Jake Lindley, and UCC Lancers student-athlete Michelle Truong, marking the conclusion of the Kent high school season.
