Rugby Canada announced the Women’s Maple Leafs roster for the upcoming Hong Kong Sevens Invitational, with Blenheim’s Breanne Nicholas being named to the roster.

Nicholas has represented Team Canada at multiple international competitions, and will again wear the maple leaf in Hong Kong China this month from March 24 to March 25.

The roster is considered the next best group, in line to make Canada’s Women’s National Team.

“I think that’s what it’s come down to now, the next 12 best,” said Maple Leafs head coach Sandro Fiorino about the selection of his roster. “Performance is evaluated week-to-week.”

“There’s always a depth chart in place that’s not written,” said Fiorino, who is an assistant coach for Canada’s National Women’s 7s team. “Players understand that when they’re on the first unit or second unit in training that they’re always pushing for that spot. Competitiveness over the last 12 months has grown. We’ve got 24 girls competing all the time for those 12 spots.”

Nicholas plays for the Western University Mustangs women’s rugby team, as well as London St. George’s club.

Last summer, Nicholas helped Canada win gold at the FISU Championships in Brazil, before being named the Player of the Series for Canada against the United States in the annual Can-Am Rugby Series.
