The statement said, “The Wallaceburg lakers would like to announce the new head coach for the 2012-2013 season, Paul Grealis. At this time we would also like to welcome part of his coaching staff, Ian Jacobs, Berk Doherty, and Jon Taylor.”

Grealis also coached the Wallaceburg Lakers in the early 2000′s taking over for Mark Davis when he moved on to coach the Petrolia Jets. Before that time, Grealis served as an assistant coach with the Lakers when they last won the league championship in 1999.

Grealis was the general manager last season for the Wallaceburg Lakers as they struggled to a 9-29-2 record. Grealis takes over from BJ Charpentier and his staff after the group was fired by the club earlier this spring.

The Chatham-Kent Association of Realtors is hosting their Annual charity golf tournament on Friday, June 15th at Country View Golf Course.

Todd Warriner, former NHL and Team Canada hockey star, will be participating in the event by challenging players to hit their ball closest to the pin for a chance to double your luck for some great raffle prizes. Todd has opened a new business in Chatham-Kent called the Hockey Station. The year round sports complex, located at 20 Currie Ave in Chatham, offers programs such as summer camps, open skates, team training packages and private lessons.

The tournament begins with a continental breakfast and registration at 8:30 and Shotgun start at 9:30. The cost is $80 per golfer which includes the cart, lunch, dinner and prizes.

In the Athlete-Modern category, the nominees are Roy Galloway, a world-class trap shooter, Jamie Jefferson, a former provincial boxing champion, Derek Krete, who was a CIS football first team all-star for UWO, and Tyson Parry, who was once Canada’s top ranked tennis player for his age and went on to play NCAA tennis in Minnesota.

In the Athlete-Legend category, the nominees are Fran Crummer, one of the areas premier female golfers and badminton players, Peter L. Gilbert, who was a championship curler, Ron Johnson, who played as one of the areas elite softball pitchers, and Brian Lancaster, who was a National champion in hydroplane racing.

The builder category nominees are Martin Aarts, Dave Allin, Jim Maynard, and Bob Weedon. Aarts is nominated for his contribution to minor soccer locally, while Allin is one of the area’s most respected and beloved basketball coaches. Jim Maynard, was an avid hockey coach and volunteer, and was instrumental in building Chatham’s bowling community, while Bob Weedon was a long time president and volunteer for Maple City Slo-Pitch.

Team nominees are the 1977-78 Thames Valley Brick Major ‘AA’ Midget Hockey Team, 1985 Juvenile Baseball Team, 1986-87 Moose Lodge Major “AA” Pee Wee Hockey Team, and the 1987 Chatham McDonald’s Pee Wee Baseball Team.

The Maple City Brewers, Chatham’s top team, is inviting any interested players to attend their spring workouts will run Friday’s at 6:30pm and Sunday’s at 2:00pm at Rotary Park in Chatham.

The Chatham Diamonds Minor travel baseball teams will also be holding tryouts in the coming weeks. Major Peewee Travel Baseball Tryouts, for any player who is born in 1999 or later, will take place at Kinsmen Park Sunday April 15th at 11am, Wednesday April 18th at 6pm, and Sunday April 22nd at 11am. What are you waiting for? It’s spring, and what better way to celebrate than watching the Detroit Tigers take on the Tampa Bay Rays April 11!

“WMLA is offering this program to introduce the game of lacrosse in a fun, no pressure environment at a very reasonable cost,” said WMLA vice president Mike Persyn.

“There are many stories of people just not having exposure to this great game, when children play the fastest game on two feet, most become instantly addicted.”

The Peanut Lacrosse program will run 13 weeks, once a week starting the third week of April.

Lacrosse is an excellent sport to help children positively develop their motor skills as well as to get the recommended amount of physical activity for youth.

The 5 & 6 year olds will be playing regular exhibition games this year against Sarnia. The organization consulted with local child care professionals in order to plan this Peanut lacrosse program with a maximum benefit for the youth involved, and will partner with the local Wallaceburg Red Devils Junior B team to give youth an opportunity to interact with skilled teachers and mentors.

A special registration will be held April 7, and all new players will be given a free lacrosse stick. For more information, check out the poster below:

The Chatham Skating Club is a non-profit organization, with this being one of our fundraisers to off-set the cost of running an efficient skating club. .

The Ice Show is a time to celebrate all of our skaters’ accomplishments over the past year. It includes skaters from pre-school level, CanSkate, right up to our Provincial and National Competitors and even our Adult Skaters.

Tickets are available for $8.00 for adults or children ages 4-12 – $5.00, and children age 3 and under are free. These can be purchased during club time on Mondays, Wednesdays from 6-8pm or Saturdays 10:30 – 11:45am at Thames Campus Arena.

Tickets can also be purchased at the door that day for $10.00.

We are also honoured to have Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch, who are the 2011 Canadian Pairs Champions, performing an exhibition skate. The pair trains at the Kitchener-Waterloo Skating Club with coaches Kris Wirtz and Kristy Sargeant-Wirtz.

As well, the Chatham Skating Club is now conducting registration for our Spring Skating Session.

Registrations will be accepted on an ongoing basis, during Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6-7pm, at Thames Campus Arena.

We will be offering – Pre-School, CanSkate, Advanced CanSkate, Adult CanSkate, PrePower CanSKate, Group StarSkate, and StarSkate. Something for every age and level.

Lessons are lead by NCCP certified professional coaches with trained program assistants.
