The first day of the three day mini-camp saw the Tiger Cats take part in team meetings and an on field practice.

“It’s nice to be out here running around, the weather turned out for us really nicely. You know we have a big group here, bigger than I thought, but it’s great, you get to meet a lot of guys and get some good work in,” said Fantuz at the Tiger Cats camp.

Early reports from Hamilton media discussed the instant chemistry Andy Fantuz found with Tiger Cats quarterback Henry Burris. For Fantuz entering camp, one of the main challenges will be learning a new offensive system and playbook after 6 seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

“We’re trying to learn the system, improve our physical skills, show what we’ve got, figure out where we’re going to play, and how we’re going to fit into what we’re trying to do as a team when training camp comes,” Fantuz said about the mini-camp.

Despite the mixed emotions Fantuz showed when choosing to leave the Roughriders this offseason, his excitement to get started with the Tiger Cats was obvious Wednesday,

“I’m a strong believer that chemistry between teammates is a big factor in success. I have no doubt about it I’m going to be best friends with most of the guys on the team. It begins today, it’s kind of an introduction day, from here on out we’ll be a pretty tight unit.”

Fantuz wasn’t the only person excited to be in Hamilton, as Henry Burris, a long time star in Calgary, also spoke about the opportunity Hamilton has for success, and he welcomed the addition of Fantuz to the Tiger Cats lineup,

“I’m happy to be here. I’m looking forward to it. Black and yellow looks good on myself. I looked at Andy (Fantuz), and I was like, ‘man you look much better in this colour than you did in green.’ It’s good to be here with guys like himself and we’re looking forward to continuing our career and having success here in Hamilton.”

Chatham's Chad Laprise

Chatham-Kent mixed martial artist Chad Laprise is one of those men who knows what he wants to do in life and knows the right way to get there. The young fighter recently quit his full time job, closed the gym he owned in Chatham and picked up his life and moved it to London. He made the move to London to train full time at the Adrenaline Training Center, one of the top mixed martial arts training centers in Canada. The move was a tremendous sacrifice but the benefits are incredible

“It’s going great that’s the best thing I ever did for my career. Now this is my full time job so I spend six, seven, eight hours a day in this gym just getting better. Before I was working full time so it was tough to get my training in like I should. I had a gym in Chatham. Now all I do is focus on training, I teach a little bit here, but the rest of the time it’s just training and I have the best training partners in the world.” Laprise said in between wrestling sessions.

“I have all the best right here. Best wrestlers, best jiu jitsu guys, best kickboxers, the best partners man. I couldn’t be happier and I couldn’t be more ready for this fight”

To get better you need to train and learn from the best fighters you can gain access to and that is what shows that Laprise knows what he needs to do to continually evolve and progress in this sport. He trains on a regular basis with such prominent fighters as the UFC’s Chris Clements, Mark Hominick, and Sam Stout. ATC is also full of a variety of elite fighters such as former IFL and WEC star Chris Horodecki who also fights for Bellator, Jesse Ronson, Clint Kingsbury, Rowan Cunningham and James Haourt and the list goes on and on.

This will be the second time in a row that Laprise will be showcasing his skills in Windsor, which is just down the highway from his hometown fans. In his last fight in local promotion “PFC Border Wars” he blitzed elite grappler Andrew McInnis and floored him with shots gaining a TKO victory at 2:29 of the 1st round. All of Chad’s fights have been 1st Round TKO victories. . I asked him if he is a cool customer handling the pressures of fighting at home.

“It’s great. It’s awesome I’ll probably have about 200-300 people there just to support me. I’ll hve more people there supporting me than last fight so it’s gonna be great.”

His opponent on April 6th is also a hometown fighter in Windor’s own Josh Taveirne. It will be interesting to see if Taveirne can take Laprise to deeper waters. Something he is well prepared for

“He’s a tough guy he’s big, he’s a wrestler, there’s really no secret right he’s gonna try and take me down and i kinda know that, and he knows I’m looking for the knockout like always so we’ll see what happens. He’s good he’s pretty well rounded and he’s gonna try to grind me out, he’s a bit bigger than me but I just think I have more skills pretty much everywhere, and as in all my fights I’m looking for the kockout.”

Laprise is too smart to look past any opponent and his focus is in full fighter mode. I look forward to seeing him fight on April 6th and see big things on the horizon in 2012.

Local skaters, aged 4 through 12 from across Chatham-Kent and Southwestern Ontario competed in the two day skating competition, and also flooded local stores, restaurants, and attractions, providing a huge boost to the Blenheim and Chatham-Kent economy over the weekend.

“We can estimate about 2000 extra people coming into a small community, to hopefully enjoy what is being offered here, and bring extra revenue to the community,” said Sharron Skipper, the Tilbury Skating Club President and Kent Region Skating Council Chair.

Blenheim organizer Richard Ainsworth also called the two day event a success, “It’s been, for sure a successful weekend. We can tell just by the sales of the programs, flowers that are being sold, the canteen has a steady flow of people going through there, which has benefits to the arena. Just the numbers of people walking through the door are amazing in itself.”

More importantly, organizers see the event as an opportunity to showcase skating locally in hopes of boosting registrations in local skating clubs.

CKSN will have details and results later this week from the event. Click play on the video below to watch local skaters competing, and hear more from organizers Sharron Skipper and Richard Ainsworth,

It seems Andy Fantuz really is happy to be home, as he’s publicly stated his dream to move to the NFL is over, after signing a 4-year contract with the Hamilton Tiger Cats. Although the NFL was a dream, for the time being, Fantuz is happy, and ready to join the Ti-Cats.

The video below, produced by the Hamilton Tiger Cats (TicatsTV), features Fantuz, as well as Tiger Cats vice president Bob O’Billovich, discussing Fantuz’s signing and what he brings to the Hamilton attack.

Fantuz and the Hamilton Tiger Cats will open their 2012 season at home against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Fantuz’s former team. The season opener will take place Friday, June 29.
