“I am proud to committ to Adrian College for many reasons such as academics, lacrosse, adn the sense of being an Adrian College Bulldog,” Carroll told CKSN.

Over the past 3 months, Carroll exposed himself to NCAA recruiters by attending camps in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts where he also worked to improve his knowledge and field lacrosse skills with other NCAA players.

In seven games with the Red Devils Junior B squad this season, Carroll has a goal and 7 assists. Playing in 12 games this summer for the St. Clair Spirt field lacrosse program, Carroll finished second in team scoring with 15 goals and 8 assists.

Carroll also credited the Wallaceburg Lacrosse system for much of his success as a player,

“Growing through the Wallaceburg Lacrosse system I have had many coaches teach me the game on the floor and field,” said Carroll.

Last season, Adrian College finished with a 17-2 overall record and were the Midwest Lacrosse Conference Champions. The Bulldogs lost to the #8th ranked team in the country (Denison) 12-11 in double overtime of the NCAA National Tournament.

Carroll is the second Wallaceburg Lacrosse product to committ to an NCAA program this year, as Zach Herreweyers, who is currently playing Junior A lacrosse in Peterborough committed to play Division I field lacrosse for Loyola University. Herreweyers is also a member of the Canadian National Junior team that will compete this summer in Finland.

After jumping out to a 2-0 lead for the third straight game, Wallaceburg fell behind in the first period exiting the frame down 5-4. Mike Myers and Red Miller had the early Wallaceburg goals, before VanDamme scored back to back goals to close out the game.

In the second, London extended their lead again while Clint Lamarsh picked up two goals for the Red Devils to keep the home club in the game.

The third period however, saw the Red Devils burn the Blue Devils with a late comeback. Rob Pollock got the scoring start, but London answered quickly. Then, Lamarsh scored, followed by another pair from VanDamme to tie and win the game.

VanDamme finished the game with 4 goals and 2 assists, while Lamarsh had 3 goals and 3 assists, and Pollock had a goal and 5 assists.

Wallaceburg, who sits atop the Far West division standings will travel to Six Nations Friday.

This past weekend the Chatham Pool Sharks spent many hours at the London pool competing against some really tough competition at the Hollandia Spring LC Invitational.

The Pool Sharks had some outstanding swims and leading the Chatham swimmers with hardware was 9 year old David Tran, bringing home 8 medals (5 of them being gold in the 10/under boys division).

Other Chatham Pool Sharks Highlights from the Meet Include:

Jake Landriault was swimming his heart out in every event but somehow kept on missing the regional cut by a small margin. It came to the last and final race and he gave everything he had in the 100 Fly and ended up qualifying for his first ever regional championships as well as receiving a Bronze medal.

Madelaine Tran, who just like Jake, swam every event and kept on missing the regional standard. In her last event she was able to take off over 20 seconds to qualify for her first ever regional championships as well. Madelaine is only 7 years old and she made the 9/under standard. Coach Reg believes that she is the youngest CYPS swimmer to ever qualify for the regional championships.

Celia Nogueira was also in the 100 fly and it was the last and final chance for her to make regionals. She took off enough time to get the regional cut. This is her first time making the regional 9/under girls standard.

Michelle St. Pierre had a race she will never forget. She has improved so much since starting with the Sharks earlier this year and has managed to get her first ever regional cut as an 11 year old girl in the 100 free.

Carolyn Tran had a great weekend. She was in the 200 breastroke and a swimmer from OAK beat her for the gold medal. On Sunday it was the 100 breastroke and Carolyn was going into finals ranked 2nd next to the same swimmer who beat her in the 200 breastroke. She was able to fight through the pain of the race and out touch the OAK swimmer by .02 for the gold medal.

Chatham Kent and Gracie Barra fighter Josh “The Ripper” Rich won the TXC 135-lb title in a tough fought main event in Michigan on the weekend. Rich battled 4-2 local fighter Dan Winston out of MASH, one of the top mixed martial arts training facility’s in Michigan. The Ripper won via unanimous decision.

Rich dominated the fight for all three rounds using aggressive takedowns and top control, and Winston had no answer for Rich’s strength and wrestling. Winston, a blue belt in BJJ did have answers for Rich’s submissions and Josh was unable to secure a finish on the Michigan fighter. This fight marks the only time that Rich has had to go the distance and was a very good test for the Dresden native.

Josh also showcased his stand-up as well and according to his coach Thomas Armstrong, it was his toughest test to date. Rich improves to 5-1 in his amatuer career and has now won two fights in a row in 2012.

There is no date set for his first title defense, and Rich will be looking to apply for his Pro application in the next few months.

Steele Takes Another Gold at The Ontario Open
Another jiu-jitsu competition on the weekend for Justin Steele, another gold medal. Such has been the ho-hum year for the 16-year old Gracie Barra Chatham star.

Steele competed in the prestigious Ontario Open BJJ championships this past weekend in Toronto in the Adult Blue Belt division.

There were 34 competitors in the division and Steele went an incredible 5-0 to take home the gold medal. He won three fights by points and two via submission finish on his way to taking home the top prize.

Steele went on to compete in the the Absolute division and beat the heavyweight silver medalist via triangle choke. He then found himself up against a man much bigger and heavier than he is in facing the Ultra Heavy Gold medalist. Steele did not shy away from the much bigger man, narrowly missed two sweeps and attempted three triangle chokes but was unable to put the big man away, eventually losing the match 4-0. His opponent went on to win Gold in the Absolute division.

Steele continues an incredible year on the mat and will now focus on the World Championships in Long Beach California at the end of the month. Two other Gracie Barra grapplers will join Steele at the worlds as Zach Fournier and coach Thomas Armstrong will also be competing in the event that takes place from May 31 to June 2.
