Sports Organizations in Chatham-Kent

Chatham-Kent Hockey Organizations

There are several minor hockey associations, and two Junior hockey leagues which operate in Chatham-Kent. The organizations, featuring both girls and boy’s hockey, service all of Chatham-Kent including Chatham, Wallaceburg, Ridgetown, Blenheim, Dresden, Bothwell, and Tilbury. As well, several outlying communities are serviced by these organizations.

In the North, Wallaceburg Minor Hockey Association offers both boys and girl’s hockey programs, while Dresden Minor Hockey Association offers predominantly boy’s hockey programs. Both organizations have been serving the area for half a century. Each year, nearby Walpole Island First Nation also sends team’s to tournaments, and was formerly a fully operating minor hockey association.

 The former City of Chatham also offers several minor hockey associations including Chatham Minor Hockey Association and the Chatham Outlaws Girls Hockey Association. The Outlaws are one of Southwestern Ontario’s premier girl’s hockey

 programs, which until recently was the lone Chatham-Kent based girl’s travel hockey organization. Now, the Outlaws are joined by the Kent County Girls Hockey Association, also known as the Kent Fillies, who are an amalgamation of girl’s hockey programs in rural centres including Ridgetown, Blenheim, Dresden, and Bothwell.

On the boy’s side, East Kent is served by Bothwell Minor Hockey, Ridgetown Minor Hockey Association, and Blenheim & District Minor Hockey Association. In South Kent, Tilbury & District Minor Hockey Association, and Southpoint (Wheatley) Minor Hockey Association.

The Chatham-Kent Cyclones organization offers “AAA” hockey. Team’s are comprised of players from across Chatham-Kent, and most team’s play and practice from a number of locations including Chatham, Bothwell, and even Walpole Island.

At the Junior Hockey ranks, the Wallaceburg Lakers, Blenheim Blades, Dresden Kings, and Wheatley Sharks play in the Great Lakes Junior C Hockey League, while the Chatham Maroons are the lone Chatham-Kent members of the Greater Ontario Junior B Hockey League.

Chatham-Kent Basketball Organizations

Basketball is a growing game across Chatham-Kent, however it is still played predominantly at the high school level. Wallaceburg and Chatham however, Chatham-Kent’s largest urban centres have developed very strong youth basketball programs, while players from surrounding towns must travel to these two locations.

Chatham-Kent Wildcats

Basketball Wallaceburg has won several provincial titles and is widely known as a big basketball program, in a small town. Up until recently, Basketball Wallaceburg has only offered a girl’s basketball program, the Wallaceburg Airhawks, but have since added some boy’s basketball.

The Chatham-Kent Wildcats welcome players from across the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, however they are centred in Chatham. This organization offers travel basketball for boy’s and girl’s of all ages. Similar to basketball Wallaceburg, the Chatham-Kent Wildcats success has been rapidly growing across the province.

Chatham-Kent Football Organizations

The Chatham-Kent Cougars are Chatham-Kent’s premier football organization. The Cougars, who play at the multi-million dollar Chatham-Kent Athletic Complex in Chatham offer football from Novice to a Varsity Club featuring athletes who are 17 and 18 years of age. Wallaceburg runs an annual Flag Football league, and also Shaun Suisham’s Kicking it for Kids Football Camp.

The main football league within Chatham-Kent, is the KCSSAA High School League which features teams from Wallaceburg, Blenheim, and Chatham.

Chatham-Kent Baseball Organizations

Chatham Minor Baseball Association is the major club serving Chatham, however most of Chatham-Kent’s smaller communities also have baseball organizations. Wallaceburg Minor Baseball, Tilbury Minor Baseball, and Blenheim Minor Baseball serve the outlying communities.

As well, Chatham-Kent is also home to the Chatham Minor Girls Softball league and the Maple City Slow Pitch League.

Chatham-Kent Rugby Organizations

Rugby is another growing sports in Chatham-Kent which is played at both the high school level in the KCSSAA league, as well as at the club level with the Kent Havoc. The Havoc run both girl’s and boy’s rugby teams, as well as a senior men’s club which has challenged team’s from across the globe.

 OCAA volleyball players with each graduation crop of athletes. The Chatham Ballhawks are the top club team in Chatham-Kent and travel across the province to tournaments each year. 

In the KCSSAA High School loop, Chatham-Kent Secondary School is known for its excellent volleyball program, although other school’s have recently made great strides in improving their own volleyball legacy’s. As well, Volleyball Kent is an organization which teaches volleyball skills in Chatham-Kent by running camps each year.

Chatham-Kent Lacrosse Organizations

Wallaceburg Minor Lacrosse is the lone lacrosse organization within the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. Players travel from all corners of CK to participate in this organization thaty annually graduates players to the Junior A and professional levels. Wallaceburg Minor Lacrosse offers lacrosse programs for all ages, including the Jr. B Wallaceburg Red Devils.

Chatham-Kent Swimming Organizations

Swimming is one of the best represented sports across Chatham-Kent with clubs in several communities across the Municipality. Popular organizations including the Wallaceburg Marlin Swim Club, the Chatham Pool Sharks, and the Blenheim Blast Swim Club. As with many other sports in Chatham-Kent, swimming is also represented at the high school level. Wallaceburg District Secondary School has the areas strongest swim team, annually sending swimmers to OFSAA.

Chatham-Kent Soccer Organizations

Soccer is extremely popular in Chatham-Kent. Almost every small community within Cahtham-Kent has their ownChatham Youth Soccer Association - Chatham-Kent Sports Network soccer association for boy’s and girl’s. In Wallaceburg, Wallaceburg Soccer Association offers programs from instructional youth, up to the Western Ontario Soccer League, Premier Division Wallaceburg Sting. Similarly, Chatham offers the Chatham Youth Soccer Association Strikers and Attach, that span from U5, up to U18. The Chatham Express play in the Western Ontario Soccer League along with Wallaceburg.

In the more rural parts of Chatham-Kent, the Blenheim Blaze and Tilbury Storm, as well as clubs in Dresden and Ridgetown provide house league and club soccer across Chatham-Kent. 

High School Soccer is also played at each of Chatham-Kent’s secondary school’s, as well as at many elementary schools.

Chatham-Kent Curling Organizations

Chatham’s Granite Club and Wallaceburg’s Sydenham Curling Club are the two largest curling organizations in Chatham-Kent. Both clubs offer weekly leagues, and serves as the home rinks for KCSSAA high school curling. Blenheim (Golden Acres Curling Club), Tilbury, and Ridgetown also house local curling clubs and leagues.
