The Chatham-Kent Cougars are preparing for the 2015 OFC football season, as three of the organizations four teams kick off their season this weekend.

The only team not to begin their season is the Kent-Lambton Cougars Varsity team, who were scheduled to face the Burlington Cougars, but will reschedule the game.

The Varsity Cougars played an exhibition scrimmage this week against the Forest City Thunderbirds at TD Waterhouse where each team started with the ball on the 35 yard line and had 10 plays to score. There was no special teams in this contest.

“Overall, I was pleased with our output,” said Varsity head coach and Cougars president Selwyn Jordan of his team’s performance in the scrimmage.

The Cougars had 1 long TD pass from Kelton Evan to Jake Anderson and we had multiple explosive plays in the running game and passing game. Dalton Shuian led the way on the ground with over 100 yards rushing on limited carries. Jalen Butcher was key in the running game and passing game with a couple of long catch receptions from both Kelton Evans and John McCauley. The offensve line and fullbacks were also impressive in the scrimmage with Nic Cuschieri, Quinn Williams, Andrew Forgie, and Mojtaba Mehry making large holes.

On defense, Kent-Lambton kept Forest City off the scoreboard. Ethan Baylis had a feisty performance with an interception and a long return, a few knockdowns, and several big tackles. Daniel Allman also had a strong performance with an interception and many hard tackles from the safety spot. The standout on the defensive line was Josh Kita who had double digit tackles and seemed to be going at a much quicker speed than the opponents. Other standouts on defense was Carter Wood running plays down, James Gibson, Ricky O’Rouke, Alex Valihora, Jake Lindley, Nic Cuschieri, Josh Graham, and Brandon Shanks.

“This is team has great athletes with very good speed, definitely need to improve on our intermediate passing game,” added Jordan. “But if we continue to work hard in practice, the sky is the limit for this teams potential.”

Junior Varsity Cougars travel to play the Burlington Stampeders at 1:30pm on May 23. Earlier in the day, the Bantam Cougars also face Burlington at 11am. The Peewee Cougars also open their season at 4:30pm the same day at home against the Forest City Thunderbirds.
