Jessie McPherson of Chatham will wear the Maple Leaf next month as she has been named to Team Canada for the 2020 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship.

The tournament, which will run from December 26 to January 2 in Bratislava, Slovakia, will see Canada strive to defend their gold medal in the event.

“We are excited about the group that will represent Canada next month,” said Gina Kingsbury, Canada’s Director of Women’s National teams. “Our staff has done an excellent job evaluating the talent through several different events, including summer camp, the three-game series against the United States and the National Women’s Under-18 Championship. We are looking forward to getting underway in Slovakia, and we are confident this group has what it takes to defend our gold medal.”

The 5’9″ McPherson, who plays in the PWHL for the Cambridge Rivulettes, competed earlier this month in the Canadian National U18 championships for Team Ontario Blue, putting up a sparkling 1.60 GAA and 0.949 save percentage in three appearances.

McPherson, who is a Chatham Outlaws and Chatham-Kent Cyclones alumni, also competed for Canada this summer at the U18 Series against the United States. She stopped 32 of 35 shots in her lone appearance.

This is McPherson’s final PWHL season. She will play NCAA Division I hockey for the University of Vermont next season.
