Chatham horse owner Steve Calhoun saw his horse, Betterthancheddar, take home one of the biggest awards in Canadian Horse Racing, the O’Brien Award this week.

Betterthancheddar won 9 of 11 races this season including victories in the Canadian Pacing Derby, Bobby Ouillen, and Des Smith. The O’Brien Award is Canada’s top honour related to standardbred racing and is voted on by members of the media.

Betterthancheddar, moving up from the sophomore to the older ranks, also took a career mark of 1:48, which equaled the world record in the Ben Franklin at Pocono Downs.

Last year, Betterthancheddar was an O’Brien Award runner up. The horse has over $1 million in career winnings and is co-owned by Chatham’s Calhoun and West Wins Stable of Cambridge
