On a night when they weren’t sure racing would take place, following a vandalism spree at South Buxton Raceway a week ago, it proved to be a night of new beginnings in more than one way.

The track collected more than $2600 from fans and volunteers to help complete repairs and clean up, while five new drivers took the checkered flag for feature wins.

Jody Mason led 15 of 20 laps in the Tirecraft Mini-Mods, taking the victory, and ending Denis DeSerrano’s three race win streak. “Me and Dessy (DeSerrano) have always have been good friends through the years, and he was the first one to come down here and congratulate me,” said Mason in a South Buxton news release. DeSerrao finished 6th after engine problems caused him to complete the race running on only three cylinders.

Leamington’s Joel Dick found the winners circle after capturing the Schinkels Gourmet Meats UMP Modifieds, holding off Joe Brosseau of Merlin and Drew Smith of Wallaceburg, who were second and third respectively.

Chris Ross of Wallaceburg grabbed the UMP Late Models win. Brad Authier and Gregg Haskell of Chatham rounded out the top three.

In the Windride Transportation Sport Stocks feature, Merlin’s Eren Vanderiviere, who has been one of South Buxton’s most consistent drivers over the past few seasons, took his first checkered flag of 2013.

Finally, Jeff Schives won the 10 lap bombers feature.

Racing continues next Saturday at 7pm. Gates open at 5:30pm.
